Winter Is the Best Season for the Springs
Here is the part most people get backwards. Florida’s springs run at a constant 72°F every day of the year. In August, when the air is in the nineties, that water feels cold. In January, when the air is in the sixties, the same water feels warm. Winter is when the springs are at their best, and it is when almost nobody is in them.
Summer at Ichetucknee Springs (opens in a new window) means capacity limits and queues at the gate. Winter means quiet water and a parking space. The same goes for Troy Spring (opens in a new window) and the rest of the Suwannee River springs on your doorstep.
Winter also brings something summer cannot. As the river cools, manatees move into the warmer spring runs — Manatee Springs State Park (opens in a new window) is about an hour from the park and is one of the more reliable places in the state to see them, roughly November through March. That is the same window you would be here for.

When to Book Your Winter at McAlpin
McAlpin is a small, rural park, so the winter sites do not last long once the season gets close. Here is roughly how the year runs:
- Spring (March–April): guests wrapping up the season claim their site for next winter on the way out
- Summer (May–August): the open winter sites go to new guests — booking now gives you the pick of them
- Fall (September–October): the last sites fill and early arrivals start settling in
- Winter (November–March): the season itself, and the springs at their quietest
